Tell us who Leila is and what you love doing in everyday life besides fashion…
I am still a little girl at heart, that loves tea time, and dressing up. I have always loved being outdoors; I love the beach, activities, animals, especially horses, Yoga, and eating at good restaurants. I love the French, Indian and Thai cuisine
How would you describe yourself? Stylish or Fashionable?
I do feel that I’m stylish. I love mixing and matching looks, depending on my mood. I think it’s important not to follow trends blindly and knowing what suits you best.
What has inspired you to start your brand?
Just this amazing sub culture of fashionistas and art that has boomed over the past 6 years in the Middle Eastern region. Our culture and how fast it’s moving, making the old modern, and the people around me including it in their lifestyles. There is so much talent and vision going around!
If you were to choose a muse, who would it be and why?
Audrey Hepburn, she’s the epitome of understated chicness and elegance. She has this girl-like innocent quality about her; she’s graceful, cute, feminine, and sophisticated all at once.
What are your aspirations for the next 5 years for your fashion brand Sugar Vintage?
I want the brand to be in every continent, and grow into the must have brand at all the hippest boutiques and department stores around the world. I aspire to do great collaborations with names that go in line with our brand. Brands like Laduree, Dita Von Teese, Benefit makeup, Miu Miu, Collete. Etc. Besides the collaborations, I’d also like to have our fashion shows in Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. Basically be part of a fashion movement in the Middle East and a great fashion council like the CFDA and BFC.
You’ve recently launched your new collection, could you elaborate more on the new collection?
Sugar Vintage’s inspiration for the SS14 collection came from Dubai's ancient Pearl Diving History.
Sugar Vintage transports you into a surreal island Copacabana beach scenery… Envision summer afternoons by the beach and sunsets over turquoise waters, a charmed life…life’s a beach…
The collection: “Sapphire Island SS14” features Sugar Vintage’s trademark shapes and embellishments throughout in a combination of sugary colors and jewel tones; blues blue’s and more hues of blue’s contrasting with black, grey, and white. This season sees a range of fabrics such as, the chequered Lungi fabric, light blue denim, cotton drill, silk dupion, and luxurious lace inserted here and there.
Dresses are a combination of fabrics and textures- silk with cotton, bright beading with diamante and lace or silk. Lungi blue fabrics on skirts, waistcoats, and jackets have a relaxed feel that work with the denim, lace, and embroidery. Although we have skipped appliqués and pop art this season, our signature is still eminent in all the hand embroidered embellishments, using the oh-so-pretty crystals.
The collection consists of playful names like pina colada, mermaid, and pearl pops.
An inspired collection Sugar Vintage’s feminine flirty lines and luxurious finish bring to mind the good and simple life, of a boho chic fashionista. What has inspired you to use classic prints and make funky prints out of them?
I get bored easily I guess; my love for fairytales and stories, and my love for colors.
Do you have a celebratory ritual after completing your collection, if so, what do you do?
Not really. I really love going to the spa and spoiling myself.
Who are the next brands to watch in the region?
Zayan the label, Reemami, House of fattam, mar mar jewelry, and OTT.
